Outlaw, Alternative Country from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Looking for a soundtrack for your next heartache, or maybe your last shot at redemption? What if your whole life has been leading up to Laverne, the debut album from Edmonton’s Wildwood?
What happens when two fireballs of the barroom stage collide?
Smart songwriting fueled by an intuitive knack for classic country cadences and pitiless hooks, that’s what!
On Laverne, Tanyss Nixi and Dave Johnston lead a crack rhythm section through future truck-stop jukebox classics (“Useless Torch”), tattered balladry (“Shatter”), dance floor rave-ups (“Rich People”), and surging country-rock (“Onward Through Life”).
Tanyss’ timeless classic vocals and Johnston’s swaggering guitar wizardry are expertly captured by local studio mastermind (and Juno Nominee) Stew Kirkwood of Sound Extractor.
This is the true tough and tender stuff—songs about smartening up the hard way, sung with real feeling, played with real grit.
Wildwood tours Vancouver Island in February, Southern Alberta in May, will be at Sasquatch Gathering in July, and are booking summer dates for 2018- more TBA!

Press Reviews for “Laverne” released Nov 25, 2017:
“Wavering somewhere between roots-rock, rave up and honky tonk, Edmonton’s Wildwood offers up a concise, 10-song debut that sounds like the members missed the last 25 years of country hokum… There’s a steely reserve hiding behind Nixi’s deceptively sweet voice, perfect for the cover of Kitty Wells’ proto-feminist anthem Honky Tonk Angels and her own Useless Torch, a song that would fit nicely in Margo Price or Whitney Rose’s set list.Highly recommended.”
Edmonton Journal, Tom Murray
“Wildwood – Here we have some Alberta classic country so raw, real and hurtin’ you’ll cry in the beer you told the guy to hold while you danced with his girlfriend, and then he drinks your beer, or something like that…The sweet and sultry vocals of Tanyss Nixi distinguishes the music of Wildwood, with “Not Fat Anymore” Dave Johnson (of the band Fuzz Kings) as the wingman. Not much Nashville bro-country here, so we must have to call it “alt-country.”

Tanyss Nixi (Songs, Vocals, Acoustic Guitar)
“Just as Nixi scrunches up her nose at those who fail to live in the moment, her beautiful voice and folk melodies remind us that changing the world really isn’t a lost cause…”
Country music was an unexpected perfect fit for vocalist/songwriter Tanyss Nixi, partly due to a childhood spent in the “Canadian Texas,” and partly because her style, range and writing just come out that way these days. Tanyss released three independent albums, starting out as alt-rock but gradually morphing back into a country artist. She has performed at national showcases such as North by North East in Toronto, the Western Canada Music Awards in Vancouver and the Much Music Unplugged/Stage 13 showcase in Edmonton to name a few. She has opened for Alejandro Escovedo, Julianna Hatfield, Sarah Harmer and performed a CBC Canada Live broadcast. Tanyss’ albums received glowing reviews from local and national print media such as Chart Attack, Exclaim!, FFWD, Edmonton Journal and The Georgia Straight, and charted on campus and community radio stations across Canada.
Dave Johnston (Songs, Vocals, Electric Guitar)
Wildwood lead guitarist/vocalist/songwriter “Fat Dave” Johnston spent his formative years in various punk/surf/rockabilly bands, but was most notably the front man and lead guitarist for The Fat Dave Crime Wave, college radio darlings the Fuzz Kings, and his recently formed rockabilly band The Confusionaires. Dave has released several albums and toured extensively in Western Canada. From early punk rock roots to traditional country, blues, and rockabilly Dave is an ever-expanding writer and performer in his own right. Dave hits the stage with supercharged electricity and skill and contributes his own thoughtful, melodic, well-crafted songs.
Chemistry, presence, strong vocals and the ability to engage an audience make Tanyss Nixi and Dave Johnston a formidable pair.
Drummer Scott Lingley (from acclaimed Alberta bands Old Reliable, Pal Joey, Minstrels on Speed) and bassist Mitch Diesel (bassist with an epic history in a Christian shoe-gaze band that toured the US and Europe, you should ask him about it some time) provide a rock-solid, creative, polished percussive backdrop.
